Behavioral Health Clinicians

Behavioral Health Clinicians

In some cases, your pediatrician or nurse practitioner will recommend that you or your child see one of our behavioral health clinicians to work on coping skills and strategies at home or school to help with behavior.

The first step is to schedule your consultation visit with one of our behavioral health clinicians. This visit will be about 30 minutes and can be in the same office where you see your pediatrician or the visit can be on Zoom. During the visit, your behavioral health clinician will talk with you about your concerns, start developing a treatment plan, and get you started with quick tips.

FAQs

  • What is a behavioral health clinician?

A behavioral health clinician (BHC) is a provider who is specially trained to help kids, teens, and families with concerns about emotions, behavior, parenting, health habits, attention, psychological factors impacting medical conditions, and adjustment to stress. BHCs at Pediatric Associates are part of the medical team and collaborate closely with your pediatrician or nurse practitioner.

  • How are BHCs at Pediatric Associates different from a traditional therapist or counselor?

At Pediatric Associates, our BHCs focus on providing short-term episodes of evidence-based treatment. We take a goal-oriented approach to get you and your family the tools you need. On average, we tend to work with families for about 1 to 8 visits for any episode of care, although every family has unique needs. We are just like your pediatrician; after the first episode of treatment, you are always welcome to check back in for additional “booster visits” in the future, as long as you are still seeing one of our medical providers. Sometimes, more specialized behavioral health treatment or ongoing services are recommended and your BHC will work with you to link with providers in the community.

  • Who attends the 1st visit?

11 years old and younger: parent/guardians ONLY attend the first visit

12-17 years old: BOTH patient and parent/guardian should attend the first visit

18 years old and older: patients can come with or without a parent/guardian to the first visit

  • Who attends the follow-up visits?

At the first visit, your BHC will talk with you about a plan for attendance to best achieve goals that are set.

  • Visit length?

The first visit is approximately 30 minutes and future visits range from 20 - 60 minutes depending on needs.

  • Does insurance cover this?

Please check with your insurance company regarding coverage. Our BHCs are in network for the same insurance plans as your pediatrician; however, each insurance company is different regarding behavioral health coverage. Similar to your medical visits, you may have a copay, deductible, or co-insurance.
